8 Things You Do That Increase Your Risk of Disease

If you want to improve your health, a good place to start are the 8 behaviors listed on the left in the circle. My recommendations:

  • Eat a diet of whole foods.
  • Be active. Here are some suggested ways to incorporate physical activity into your daily life.
  • Stop smoking. Visit your primary care physician (PCP) to set a quit date and start a smoking cessation plan.
  • Discuss with your PCP the right health screening tests for you. Depending on your overall health and family history, your PCP can order the appropriate tests such as a mammogram, lipid panel, colonoscopy, etc.
  • Learn how to manage stress. I like this tutorial from The Patient Education Group.
  • Set a goal of 8 hours of sleep a night and practice good sleep hygiene.
  • Drink in moderation. One alcoholic drink a day for women, two for men.
  • Make these healthy behaviors a habit and part of your lifestyle.
