Precision and Accuracy
One of the most technological advances in the field of radiation oncology is stereotactic radiosurgery often abbreviated “SRS”. SRS targets radiation to small tumors in the brain and spine with precision and accuracy. The radiation beams enter the body from multiple angles and intersect where the tumor is located, targeting high dose radiation and avoid other critical tissues that surround it. Typically one to three treatments are needed to successfully eradicate the tumor. A similar technique for the rest of the body is stereotactic body radiation therapy or “SBRT”. SBRT is often utilized to target small tumors in the lungs, liver, pancreas, and prostate. SBRT is delivered in two-to-five treatments and also delivers high-dose, focused radiation while safely avoiding other normal tissue around the tumor.
SRS and SBRT require special equipment and a trained radiation oncologist to deliver.
