Doctors know that cancer is caused by 3 things: your genes, your diet, and your environment. Rarely would cancer be caused be just one of these factors, we believe in a “multi-hit hypothesis” which means that if you are genetically predisposed to get cancer (if it runs in your family) then the diet you choose to eat and the environment you choose to live in may cause you to be at an increased risk of cancer.
Hence the reason doctor’s focus on eating healthy, being active, and living in a smoke-free environment. You can reduce your risk of cancer with the choices you make every day!
Dr. Bhatia has provided a survey to assess your environment. To my knowledge, she is the first physician to attempt to measure our toxic exposure with a simple, easy-to-use tool. As an oncologist, I recommend you take the survey and see what changes you can start making to reduce your risk of cancer.
